Tips and tricks

Small things that make this quicker.

None of these are clever. They are the things people work out after a month of using it, collected here so you do not have to wait a month.

  1. Talk it. Do not type it.

This one came from a customer, and it is the best tip on the page.

Your phone's keyboard has a little microphone on it. Press it and just say the post out loud, the way you would tell somebody at the pub what you did today. The phone writes it down for you.

It is quicker than typing with one thumb, it works with dirty hands, and if English is not your first language it is far easier to say a sentence than to spell it. Tidy it up afterwards, or press the writer and let it tidy it for you.

  2. Take the photo first, then write.

Photograph the finished job before you pack up. Everything else can happen later, on the couch, but the photo can only be taken while you are standing there.

It is also the one thing Instagram insists on: no photo, no Instagram post.

  3. A few words is enough. The writer does the rest.

You do not have to write anything good. Type "replaced a hot water system in Buderim, old one had rusted through" and press the button that offers to write it for you.

If you want a proper article rather than a couple of lines, choose Tell the whole story and it will write one.

  4. No photo? There are two ways out.

Find a photo searches a library of free ones — type what the post is about and take your pick.

Make a picture draws one to order if nothing fits.

  5. Do a week in one sitting.

Sunday night with a cup of tea is worth four hurried posts. Write three or four, put a date on each one, and the Schedule screen sends them out through the week while you are on a roof somewhere.

Posting every week is what makes a page look alive. Posting brilliantly once does not.

  6. Put it on your phone's home screen.

It sits there like any other app, opens straight to the writing screen, and you stop having to remember the web address.

Social Relay offers to show you how the first time you open it on a phone.

  7. Post the job, not an advert.

"Finished this bathroom today" with a photo beats anything with the word solutions in it.

Nobody is reading your posts for entertainment. They are checking whether you are still trading and whether your work looks decent. That is a low bar and a photograph clears it.

  8. Say where you were.

"A leaking shower in Maroochydore" is worth more than "a leaking shower". People search for a trade and a suburb together, and your own website is one of the five places this goes.

  9. Nobody is marking you.

A post that gets two likes has not failed. The person who was going to ring you saw that you posted last week and rang you. That is the whole job.

Do not delete things. A page with forty ordinary posts on it looks like a business. A page with four perfect ones looks abandoned.

  10. If something disconnects, it is normal.

Facebook and LinkedIn make every app prove itself again from time to time, and they will do it to us. Social Relay tells you, your other destinations keep working, and reconnecting takes about thirty seconds.

The guides walk you through every one of them.
